At Caedmon College Whitby, we are committed to providing impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance for all our students and so we are pleased to have been awarded the Careers Quality Award in 2018. We provide our careers education in several ways – through the curriculum, within our ‘Big Picture’ programme, through careers’ workshops, via an independent careers adviser and also by organising employer and other educational provider visits to the College to speak to our students. We assess the impact of our careers programme in different ways: questionnaire; anecdotal evidence, verbal feedback and our destinations. The evidence gathered from this and from the feedback we have received from students, staff, parents and providers is used to review and inform our yearly careers programme review.

We are committed to

Students are entitled to
- clear advice and information about all the options available for their future, so that they understand the decisions they make
- support and guidance to help them to make choices and complete a career plan for their future
- help to decide what to do when they have finished Years 11 and 13, including further learning, training and employment
- a programme of careers education, helping them to develop the skills and knowledge they need to make the best career choices for them
- opportunities to learn about the world of work
- careers guidance that is impartial, confidential, focused on individual needs, fit for purpose, supportive of equal opportunities, and that is provided by people with relevant training and expertise.
At Key Stage 5, support will be provided for students to
- write university applications and personal statements, through 1:1 support and the Unifrog university programme
- research and evaluate all of their options so that they can choose and apply for the most appropriate opportunity/ies
- take part in enrichment opportunities to enhance their CV or personal statement
- develop their CV and personal statement
- understand what employers are looking for in relation to behaviour at work
- consider a back-up plan in case things go better or worse than expected.
All parents and carers can expect to
- be able to make an appointment with a member of staff or specialist adviser to discuss their son/daughter’s progress and future prospects
- have access to coaches, tutors, subject and specialist advisers at parents’ evenings and development discussions in Year 7-13 and at an options evening for those with a son or daughter in Year 8
- be able to view the careers programme online
- receive invitations to take part in careers and information events
- have the opportunity to comment on the usefulness of the careers programme to their son/daughter and make suggestions as to how it might be improved.

What is an apprenticeship?
Apprentices are employed in a job and paid a salary, whilst undertaking training to support the development of their skills. Apprentices will spend at least 20% of their paid time completing ‘off-the-job’ training where they will be supported by a training provider to achieve their apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England and have no upper age limit.
