Online Safety Concerns

Police have made us aware of a number of incidents in our community which we need to pass on to you as parents/carers.

A number of young people have been contacted through social media (including Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram) and asked for inappropriate images. The people requesting these images often pose as somebody of a similar age and can be from anywhere in the world.

Once a photo has been sent it is no longer the property of the young person, they have no control over who sees it and how it is used. We are aware of cases where they have been used to extort money, blackmailing the young person to forward the images to their friends and family in a threatening way.

Nobody should ever feel an obligation to send inappropriate images to anyone they know or don’t know, but we are asking parents and carers to be aware and help keep our young people safe. If you are concerned that this may have happened, please contact the police.

We will be passing this information to our young people over the next few days as part of our online safety education.

Kind regards

Ms Boyd
Head of School
