Curriculum

Our aim is to provide students with a curriculum that is committed to delivering academic success and providing an environment where individual learners thrive and become confident, independent and informed citizens of the future.

Our curriculum

Through our curriculum and approaches and support we aim to challenge students to achieve more than they thought possible.

From day one, we want our students to be happy, challenged and excited about coming to our school and build upon their learning experiences at primary school. They will experience a curriculum which constantly reinforces the core values of friendship, excellence and respect whilst providing engaging and challenging experiences both within and outside the classroom.

Students in Key Stage 3 will follow the National Curriculum and its broad and balanced range of subjects. This will provide a firm foundation upon which to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of the subjects. Year 7 and 8 students will study English, maths, science, art, drama, music, French, German, geography, history, religious studies and philosophy, resistant materials, food technology, computer science, physical education and personal development.

As they prepare to enter Year 9, they will make choices that will include subjects from the Arts, Humanities, Technology and Languages. This year is all about starting to make choices and deepen the knowledge and skills required within some subjects, whilst keeping a breadth of study across the curriculum.

These options will be further refined when our students start Year 10 and GCSE courses begin. Here they specialise in those subjects that will prepare them for their future, expand their knowledge, understanding and love of the subject.

Year 11 is where our students become experts, learning in greater depth, presenting clear arguments and gaining the skills of independent research in preparation for GCSE examinations.

Our teaching is characterised by a detailed knowledge of every individual within a class, high expectations and positive relationships. Combined with superb subject experience, knowledge and specialisms allow our students to reach their full academic potential. This is further supported by our excellent Learning Support and Pastoral Team.

We aim to ensure rapid and sustained progress by engendering a love of learning and delivering a creative curriculum which is supported by the explicit teaching of literacy and metacognitive skills throughout.

Through the delivery of our curriculum, we recognise the incredible resource that our local environment provides. We will utilise the landscape, heritage and culture on our doorstep. However, we recognise the need to provide a first class personal development and enrichment programme that highlights and promotes a wider view of the world and the opportunities that are available. To support this development we timetable one lesson of Religious Studies and one lesson of PHSE and Citizenship each week. These personal development lessons are supplemented by an extensive educational visit and extra-curricular programme.
