Government School Closures

Coronavirus update – Friday 20 March 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

As you are aware, Caedmon College Whitby and Whitby Sixth Form will close today to the vast majority of students for the foreseeable future, as instructed by the government. It will however, remain open to provide care for the children of key workers and those students who are deemed to be vulnerable. Please refer to the latest government guidance about its definition of key workers:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-maintaining-educational-provision/guidance-for-schools-colleges-and-local-authorities-on-maintaining-educational-provision

It is important to emphasise the key principles within this guidance:

if it is at all possible for children to be at home, then they should be
if a child needs specialist support, is vulnerable or has a parent who is a critical worker, then educational provision will be available for them
parents should not rely, for childcare, upon those who are advised to be in the stringent social distancing category such as grandparents, friends, or family members with underlying conditions
parents should also do everything they can to ensure children are not mixing socially in a way which can continue to spread the virus. They should observe the same social distancing principles as adults.
It is in everybody’s best interests to ensure that all children and adults remain safe and that social distancing and self-isolation guidance is followed stringently. However, schools also recognise the importance of ensuring that our critical workers are still able to go to work and continue the national effort to mitigate the effect of the coronavirus spread.

In the light of this government advice, please carefully consider whether school is the best place for your child to be, irrespective of whether you are a critical worker. If you are a critical worker and believe you have no choice but to send your child to school or your child is vulnerable, please send them to school at the normal time on Monday 23 March 2020. They will not be required to wear school uniform.

Please also note that if your son/daughter uses transport provided by the local authority, it is our understanding that it will continue to be provided. We also request that if your son/daughter is to attend school, you email us at post@ccwhitby.org as soon as possible so we can make provision for them.

We are in the process of contacting families entitled to free school meals to detail what arrangements are being put in place to continue this provision.

I will endeavour to write to you again later today with further news about our closure.

Yours sincerely

Simon Riley
Principal
